About the Author
Anastassios-Fivos Christidis was Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Director of the Linguistics Section of the Centre for the Greek Language in Thessaloniki. He has previously published, in Greek, Language, Politics, Culture (1999) and Aspects of Language (2003).

A Remarkable Compendium of Knowledge

A.-F. Christidis did a remarkable job editing this volume. This work is a remarkable compendium of knowledge on the Ancient Greek language. The majority of the scholars (and there were eighty of them) orginate from England or Greece, with a minority from other European countries and a few from North America. This work was orignially published in Greek in 2001, and this English translation took place in 2007. This will probably be considered the most important volume on Ancient Greek, as far as reference type works go, for many years to come. There is simply no other book which comes close to doing what this work accomplishes. Much light is shined on every crevice and corner of the language's history. I frankly do not know how to summarize it's contents. I will not try since the table of contents is viewable here on Amazon. I highly recommend this work. Having access to the volume of specialized scholarship which is available in this work, almost justifies the exorbitant price.

Many congratulations to CUP for publishing this remarkable collection of essays
on the history of the ancient Greek language. Until now,
"A History of the Greek Language: From Its Origins to the Present" by Adrados
was the most complete book on the evolution of Greek I knew.
But Adrados's book is out of date and this important new collection provides results
from the most recent archaeological and linguistic findings. The amount of detailed
and insightful analysis is impressive. The style is not very technical, and there
are some nice background material to be found. So it could be useful to undergraduate students too.
With the exception of its prize, this book introduces a beautiful landscape for all hellenists
around the world.
