The Sons of King Ragnar (The Viking Wars Book 1), by J Michael Reay

About the book

During Charlemagne’s ‘Holy’ wars of conquest, many of the age-old trade routes from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean had been closed, causing great discomfort to the people living in the countries bordering the Baltic Sea; many of whom had relied on the trade routes for their livelihood. After years of being unable to access the former trade routes this discontent boiled over into open hostility and after the death of Charlemagne many Northern kings and Jarls led armies to France and Germany to extract plunder there that they were unable to trade for in the Mediterranean: Later they were to travel to Spain as well as England, Scotland and Ireland.
This period of history would become known as the Early Viking Age. Denmark did not have enough men to invade France proper but likewise France, which was governed by a number of different ‘rulers’ who were often hostile to their king Charles II, was in turn unable to drive the Danes out completely. The raids, therefore, although often isolated from one another; could actually be seen as a concerted attempt by the Danish people to make the Franks pay for blocking their routes to the Mediterranean Sea.
These ‘raids’ by the Danish people were so widespread and so long-lasting that they could perhaps be better described as VIKING WARS.
Elric, a young English boy is taken during a raid on Northumbria. His captor at first intends to sell him as a slave but later relents and gives him to his younger brother Hastein as a ‘companion’: Elric is subsequently made ’fostri’; he is fostered by the youngster’s mother and brought up as a Dane. He becomes the boy’s constant companion and later changes his name to Eric as it sounds more Danish.
Hastein is one of the illegitimate sons of King Ragnar Lodbrok of Jellund: Ragnar ‘Leather trousers’ has many sons.
As Hastein’s companion Eric later relates the life story of Hastein who, in the year 896, was declared King of All England; in spite of the fact that Wessex, with its tenacious King Alfred; was still unconquered.
THE SONS OF KING RAGNAR is the first part of a modern retelling of the ‘Saga of Ragnar’s sons’ and other stories; though perhaps with more historic detail.
The tale continues with the second book ‘Hasteinsaga’ available soon.

Almost Perfect Viking Age Books
By Terry D. Janes
I'll start this review of both book 1 and 2 by saying that this writer seriously needs a good editor. There are some spelling, grammar and punctuation issues throughout both books. If you can make it past those kinds of problems, the story itself is great, and the writer's grasp on Viking Age history and knowledge is above par, and far above that of most writers in this genre. As a lifetime student of Norse history, I am very tough on writers who don't really understand the Norse or the times in which they lived. J. Michael Reay is a breath of fresh air! He's done his homework, he's stayed true to the times, and has an in-depth understanding of what it was like to be a Norseman. I bought and started reading book #2 first, because Amazon's search engine didn't make me aware there was a book #1 until I'd started on book #2. That turned out actually okay, because both books stand on their own as excellent stories of the same people. Some of the more esoteric parts of Norse life may not be appreciated by the casual reader, but even then, I think they will find both books enjoyable. However, if you know your Norse history, and appreciate a writer who paints a story with a realistic view of what being a Norseman was really like, then I think you'll love these books. If the author happens to read these reviews, I thank you, tip my hat to you, and will toast your talent as a Skald with a glass of my best homemade mead! To all those wannabe writers of Norse historical fiction, this is the guy you can take lessons from! If I could, I would rate these books 4 1/2 stars, and just deduct a 1/2 star for the need for editing of these books. But, I am stuck giving them 4 stars. If they were given a good editing, I would gladly rate these books 5 stars in a heartbeat. I sincerely hope that this author writes many, many more books on this period, and that someone steps up and gives him some good editing help.

Vikings 101
By Pippin
I found it informative because I know nothing about the Vikings, a painless way of learning about a different culture. Not finding much in the book about how the author put together the story and consequently looking up Ragnar & his sons on the Internet to determine how much of the tale that Reay told is research-based, I found out that there is such a thing in Viking lore as The Saga of The Sons of Ragnar. This leads me to conclude that this book may be a translation or a paraphrasing of a written version of tale based on hundreds years of verbal transmission. I would like to think that it is a faithful modern rendition of the saga and that the knowledge I've gained is legitimate.

No detail. Written by a computer?
By Love to Read
While the premise behind this book is interesting, the book is so poorly written that reading it is a distraction from the story. The book provides absolutely no detail to flesh out the character, the setting, etc. The limited descriptions of historical items such as weapons read as if they were lifted from placards from a museum. This book is so formulaic it reads as if it were generated by a computer program. I will not be purchasing additional titles by this "author."
