Animal as Metaphor

What do animals and art have to do with art? Everything - and that is proved again and again in the new book by E. Ashely Rooney. From the earliest interpretations of animals found on cave walls and on ceramic vessels, animals have inspired, awed, and given humans a way to transcend
their earthly bodies. Just about every culture has used animals to define and elevate their traits, rituals and spiritual understandings.
After seeing so many accomplished artists interpreting their understanding of mammals, it becomes clear that animals over the ages have acted as metaphor for the human condition, enlightened being, the last/lost wilderness, our youth and the passage of time. Animals are the one subject that never stay the same.

I am honored to have been asked to show my work in this beautiful hard cover book by Ashley Rooney. It was a joy to work with her and to meet some of the artists who also participated. Ashley summed up her feelings for this group of artists and the collection of their work in her acknowledgement for the book: "Their work is exciting, they look into the future, and I learn from them."
I feel we can all learn from this book, about nature and how to share this planet together, animals and humans, in a natural heartfelt way. Thank you to all of the artists who participated and to Ashley who brought it all together so beautifully.
