As a distinguished Baptist pastor, educator, and public servant, Samuel DeWitt Proctor made it his mission to serve American life by fighting against racism. In The Imposing Preacher, Adam Bond shows how Proctor, as the product of a prophetic black church tradition, a social gospel-laced liberal Protestantism, and a black middle-class integrationist ethos, envisioned a type of pulpit activism through which the United States could realize a civil society and genuine community, and was able to anticipate and contest some of the themes articulated in the black religious movements of the late twentieth century.
Bond shows Proctor to be a public theologian committed to developing an inclusive and racially pluralistic global society that confronts racism as the social crisis of its time. Proctor did not respond to segregation through marches and visible protests. Instead he saw the classroom and the pulpit as the sacred spaces for dialogue about race in America. In this way, he presents an alternative model of religious and social leadership and for studies of African American religion in the twentieth century.

Having had the privilege of working closely with Samuel D. Proctor between 1972 and 1976, I celebrate this book by Adam Bond. He captures both the qualities and the achievements of a man who was truly an imposing preacher and an invaluable mentor and model in ministry. Persons like Dr. Proctor are too often overlooked for the role they played in providing counsel and support for the leaders of the civil rights movement from Martin Luther King, Jr. who followed Proctor to Crozer Theological Seminary in 1948 to Jesse Jackson who was student body president at North Carolina A&T in 1961 when Proctor was president of the university. Bond manages to trace the career of this remarkable man from a leading black college administrator, to a Kennedy-Johnson era federal official, to being the successor of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. at Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York City. Few Americans have made as big an impact in so many different arenas as Proctor. Adam Bond tells that story with careful research and clear and accessible writing. This is an imposing book about an imposing preacher.

Theology

I enjoyed reading about Dr Proctor's life and the women and men who has influenced him to be the caring activist in the community and how he listened to God, becoming a man of faith that took action I stead of wishing someone else would stand instead. He became an upright righteous man who made difference and through his actions his legacy still lives.
