Oprah isn't the enemy

This is a scholarly history of what Harold Bloom, called "the American Religion," that is, the tradition of individual spiritual seeking which has a major source in Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, James--you know, the usual suspects. It's a useful counter-balance to the line from major thinkers like Robert Bellah (whom I admire enormously) that Americans under-value tradition, community, self-control, and discipline. As Schmidt points out, things are more complicated than that. There's a passion in this book, and Schmidt has his own point of view that comes through strongly without becoming overbearing (in my view). If you have a scholarly bent and are interested in spirituality, religion, or politics, you'll find this book stimulating even if you don't agree with it.

Takes some of the guessing out of the codes

The commentary really helps explain the different nuances and provides references for related sections. With the turbo tabs and a few post-it tabs, I can find the most used sections easily.
The commentary does make the book much thicker. Without the tabs, the extra thickness made it harder to find that one sentence or table you are looking for.

This book is about the design and working of management accounting and control from an organizational and sociological perspective. It focuses on how control systems are used to influence, motivate, and control what people do in organizations. The new edition is organised into four thematic parts which seek to illustrate, respectively: the nature of Management Accounting and Control Systems (MACS), how and why these change, their function and use in practice, and how they are related to general issues of governance in contemporary organisations, economies and society.
