It's really scarey to know this is the most widely used economics book in colleges. But actually, it's scarey to know economics is taught period. How do you teach a subject where none of the people gaining PhD status in the discipline can agree on anything?

A lot of money for a little gain.

By its nature (a text book) this is very boring. Although boring, the material is presented quite well. However, the text won't be of much help unless you have a good economics professor to help you out with some of the material. I don't know why I bought this book, we never used it in class. This book isn't the best source from which to learn economics. A live person can probably help you learn more, and it may well be cheaper than this overpriced book.

Most Important Book I Read in College

As I pursue my doctorate in mathematics education and look back over the textbooks I've read over many years of schooling, I'd have to say that Samuelson's Economics--required reading years ago when I took Freshman microecomics--has had the strongest long-term influence on my world view. Concepts like:
-the way competition works to make an efficient but not necessarily equitable economy,
-positive and negative externalities (i.e., the inefficiency caused when I benefit but you pay)
have been critical in helping me understand the currents behind modern political and economic debates.
You need some comfort with mathematics (algebra and graphing) in order to get the most benefit from this book--but certainly anyone who did well in Algebra 1 has a sufficient background.
I'd recommend this book strongly for anyone interested in developing a deeper understanding of human affairs and society.

About the Author
Alexander Herzen was born in Moscow in 1812 and educated at Moscow University. He entered government service but was denounced for his democratic and westernizing ideas. After inheriting a fortune on his father's death, he left Russia in 1847, never to return. He experienced the revolutions of 1848 in France and Italy, and settled in London in 1852, where his home became a mecca for Russian visitors and for an assortment of liberals and radicals. He wrote prolifically, embarking on the monumental and amorphous body of memoirs by which he is best known, the first two volumes of which appeared in 1861. He left London in 1865 to continue his activities as a radical publicist on the continent, and died in Paris in 1870. The subtitle of Richard Garnett's biography (reissued in Faber Finds) of his grandmother, Constance Garnett (1861-1946) is A Heroic Life. It couldn't be more apt. She remains the most prolific English translator of Russian literature: twelve volumes of Dostoevsky, five of Gogol, six of Herzen (his complete My Past and Thoughts), seventeen of Tchehov (her spelling), five of Tolstoy, eleven of Turgenev and so on. Many of these will be appearing in Faber Finds. In all she translated over sixty works. It is not, however, the sheer quantity that is to be celebrated, though that in itself is remarkable, it is more the enduring quality of her work. Of course there have been critics - translation is a peculiarly controversial subject, but there have been many more admirers. Tolstoy himself praised her. Of her Turgenev translations, Joseph Conrad said 'Turgeniev (sic) for me is Constance Garnett and Constance Garnett is Turgeniev'. Katherine Mansfield declared the lives of her generation of writers were transformed by Constance Garnett's translations, and H. E. Bates went so far as to say that modern English Literature itself could not have been what it is without her translations. This extraordinary achievement was accomplished despite poor health and poor eyesight, the latter being ruined by her labours on War and Peace ,a tragic if fitting sacrifice; hers indeed was A Heroic Life.

I have three wonderful grandsons and I wanted them to know what I consider important to help them along life's way.  Manners and character development should never go out of style.  There is always room for improvement in everyone no matter how old you are.  This book was dedicated to my grandparents who helped put me through school and had a tremendous impact on me as I grew up.  It has a Lowcountry theme and depicts illustrations from visiting the area around Lands End, South Carolina, where they took me every summer to their beach house.  My family still shares the ownership of the Beach House and we still go and enjoy St. Helena Island.  This book includes many life lessons about being a good sport, the way to treat a lady,  being responsible and respectful, using self-control, how to handle bullying, making good decisions, having a good attitude, improving character, advice on using technology safely and properly, and good manners in general.  This book includes ways to improve life skills through improving your manners and building good character in boys!

About the Author
Gail Reed grew up spending summers in the Lowcountry at Lands End, South Carolina, fishing, crabbing, and skiing in the waters of St. Helena Sound.  The artwork in this book has a Lowcountry theme.  Gail is a retired educator and lives in Evans, Georgia, with her husband, Travis.  They have two adult daughters, Shelli and Whitney, and five grandchildren.

"Manners and More for Boys" is beautifully written and illustrated. The book's content captures the essences developing appropriate social skills in childhood and adolescence. The author skillfully weaves the importance of good manner in boys to building a solid foundation for men in adulthood. "Manners and More for Boys" is an excellent resource for parents to follow as a guide for development of appropriate social and emotional adjustment in boys. As a clinician who specializes in the treatment of psychological and emotional issues in children, I heartily recommend this book to parents, grandparents, and teachers.

When I heard that Gail Reed had a new book on Manners for Boys I just had to get it for my grandchildren. She did such a wonderful job of teaching manners to fifth graders for many years, and she addressed those things that boys need to hear the most. I think it will make a nice reference for parents that need a backup for teaching good behavior; it's good for parents to have a backup. The colorful illustrations showing children in low country scenes are also very appropriate.

In Mrs. Reed's second book she captures the attention of little boys in respect to their special place in the world. As with her first book, manners are taught in a manner consistent with building confidence. So we gals know what is expect and anticipate, this book should be read by little girls and grown women, too.

needs work

This M/M fantasy novella, presumably the first instalment in a series, has flaws and strong points.

What I mostly missed is the scope, the wide narrative breadth that is so typical of successful "sword and sorcery"s. This author often appears to be in a hurry: she does not take her time with her settings and her dialogues; she does not make the most of her situations; she does not develop her plot to its full potential.
This might appear minor, but it detract from the overall narrative tension.
In a fantasy, details are essential to the whole: they help the reader to suspend disbelief; they give true depth to plot and characters. Ms Delecour seems to realise that something is wrong and tries to make up for it by introducing short paragraphs that give insight into her characters' psychologies and explain the point she is trying to make, but this device is dissatisfying and ends by making it clearer that something else is missing.

On the other hand, this novella manages to entertain all the same:
there are some nice action scenes; there are good dialogues; there is a decent intrigue and characters are likeable. It really needed more pages, though.

I loved it!

I completely loved this book; the characters, the plot, the world, everything. It was full of adventure, mystery, and a far share of flirting and banter between the two main characters. I couldn't put it down and I am eagerly awaiting the next book that Delecour writes.

Difficult English, tears, and laughter

The book was well written, though partly uses “old English” (the best, quickest example being the word daemon = demon) and for that it was slightly harder to read than was necessary, but on the other hand the style suited the book well.

The beginning of the book didn’t suck me in immediately, but very soon thereafter I was quite invested in it, and I didn’t put the book down for much else besides sleeping and eating. The book both moved me to tears and made me laugh, loudly. I think that the characters were well written, they were deep and believably human.

Most of the book happens in the span of two weeks, and based on that, one could say that the development of the romantic relationship was fast; but while reading the book there is so much going on at once that the progress is agonizingly slow. However through common hardships I thought the relationship developed naturally in the span of a few days, and the rate of progress did create a great anticipation for the ending of the book. I mean to say that for this book the romance aspect was more like a spice, it wasn’t everything. This book has a story to tell besides the romance.

The book also illustrated humanity well, in the worst sense of the word “humanity”. I dislike reading about it, but it also told of the author’s good understanding of the human nature. For this book, I suppose it was a necessary evil.

comprehensive text valuable for all discplines

I have the second edition, which just came out. The text is a comprehensive text of nearly all major areas of statistics. The examples are largely from dairy and other veterinary areas, but the text can be of substantial use to those in most any discipline. I am thoroughly impressed with the text, and highly recommend it to anyone interested in statistics. The authors are masters of making difficult areas of statistics clear and comprehensible. I try to do that in my own books, and know how difficult it can be. These authors are definitely successful in that goal.

When the second edition is listed on Amazon I will write an enhanced review.

The book arrived at an excellent status and the shipping was fast. Very impressive. I, however, was hoping to find a used copies of this book for a cheaper price. Other than it is super expensive, I really liked this item. I recommend that Amazon customers use the Amazon card service which can help them with paying later or on several payments for certain items, specially, books.

Puzzled by why your man pulls away?

I don't think that there's a woman alive who hasn't been puzzled when her man went into full retreat mode even when their relationship has been going swimmingly well. It's perplexing; it's frustrating; but Michael Finlayson has she some light on why men withdraw from their partners. It might be because "He is just not that into you", or it may be because he is so into you that it frightens him to death.

Michael looks at both sides of the coin and also offers a ton of other insights into this problem. If you are at a loss why your man seems to be growing distant, pick this up. You will probably see your own relationship here. You will know what to do to bring him back in, or whether it's time to call it a day.

Another Perspective

I found this book very refreshing in that it is from a male point of view. It was interesting to learn the reasons men might pull away from a relationship from a man's point of view. The author does a very good job at offering advice on the different ways one can work on a relationship to make it last as well as lessen the fear that a lot of men feel when faced with a serious romantic relationship. The author is also very straightforward in saying that if you've tried all you can and the man still pulls away, it's time to move on and find something deserving of you. This was a fast read and made some really good points that anyone can use in his or her relationship.

Yes, by all means, ladies, twist yourself into a pretzel trying to "figure out" a man who can't handle emotional intimacy. Actually, no, don't do that. Get some self respect, leave him, and find someone who doesn't randomly "pull away" because things are (horrors!) "going well." Or stay single.
