Excellent approach to public policy making in the U.S.

This text offers an excellent approach to the study of the public policy-making process in the U.S. using an applied problem-solving model. It provides brief but insightful glimpses into the history of the field. It widely surveys current thinking and offers good syntheses of past work, e.g., Charles Jones' An Introduction to the Study of Public Policy, James Anderson's Public Policy-Making: An Introduction, and Thomas Dye's Understanding Public Policy. This text, however, goes beyond previous work to provide many helpful models for organizing a wide variety of approaches to the subject, including public choice, welfare economics, corporatism, pluralism, neo-institutionalism, and statism. These models, often displayed in the form of easily understood charts or tables, reveal the basic assumptions underlying the myriad of approaches to the subject, e.g., inductive versus deductive theory construction, and individual, group, or institutional level of analysis. This text offers a very useful taxonomy of typical policy styles with respect to specific areas of government activity to explain the differences between incremental and non-incremental policy change (the latter termed paradigm shifts). Finally, the authors recognize the complexity of both the policy-making process itself and the study of it

more than a superb textbook

Looking around for a book on policy studies for advanced and graduate students, I have carefully checked about two dozen popular introductory works. This one by Howlett and Ramesh is by far the most stringently argued and best structured work on the policy process that I have come across. This book really is an eye-opener on the policy process. My students find it demanding but extremely instructive and stimulating in thinking about how policies are being made. Strong recommendation!

Good text on public policy

This is a nice, functional textbook on the public policy process. It is a bit brief for my tastes, but is organized nicely.

The first part lays out the basics--Why study public policy? What are the theoretical approaches to public policy? What is the context in which public policy develops. This is an important chapter, since context varies from country to country, and the reader must understand that. I teach a graduate course in public policy and a doctoral course in policy analysis. The chapter on context, to me, is critical in such a class--and the chapter is nicely done in this text.

The next part of the book looks at the stages of the policy process: (1) agenda setting (what are the issues that get on the table for serious discussion); (2) policy formulation (How do we determine the policy alternatives from which to choose?); (3) Decision-making (How does a policy get made?); (4) How are policies implemented (put into effect?); (5) How do we evaluate policies.

The final chapter looks at policy change.

All in all, a nicely written book that considers key issues. Perhaps somewhat more detail would be helpful, but. . . .

Funny and Fun

Very fun, funny, entertaining, and even despite the witchy powers, believable. It wasn't ridiculous or eye rolling. The story had a lot of twists and turns that I didn't entirely predict and I thoroughly enjoyed the humor and the characters' banter.

Very enjoyable and very well written. I just don't feel like summarizing the plot right now. LOL

Favorite moment: Ash thinks his "pageboy" is a shy boy and decides to have some fun with what he considers is an awkward teenager... "Go on." Ash waggled his hips to make his (you know what) swing. "We've both got one of these. I'm sure mine looks the same as yours."

OMG. Imagine how embarrassed he will be when he discovers his pageboy is a chick. LOL

A worthy successor

I devoured the first book in this series, and I was interested in seeing what would happen to Ash so I devoured this one too. Unlike the heroine of the first book, Pippa is new to her powers and knows next to nothing about them. Ash is knee deep in his own intrigues, and there is very little of the Merritts in this book. I did like Pippa's conflict as hers was understandable. I didn't like Ash's conflict as much. While Archer solves the problem nicely at the end, I couldn't help feeling like something was lost. And yes, the book was realistic in its solution, but I found the change disappointing to an otherwise smashing success. I guess I read romances for the completely happy endings. Since this was the second time I had read about a witch of Archer's making some of the scenes were easy to anticipate. Still, it is a worthy successor to the first book, and I am genuinely looking forward to the rest of the series.

Not worth the effort to read.

I read the first book in the series and felt it was just okay. The characters weren't fully fleshed but enough so one's interest didn't stray too far. It was a pleasant story but had serious faults with pacing, leaving plot lines dangling and introducing characters that are not remotely useful to the narrative. That was nothing compared to this book!

The premise is okay. I could believe that, but the character of Pippa is drawn so ineptly that she seems completely incompetent, ridiculous and childish. Regardless of what's happened before, her continual response to adversity is to run away. How many times does that reaction have to not work for her to realize it's not a good response? Perhaps she should think twice before running away from the only person who is protecting her. It makes no sense for her to blindly run whenever something untoward occurs.

The fact that Ash has his title and lands revoked by the queen is the most ridiculous plot point I've seen yet! If he was formally adopted by his biological mother's husband, then he is the legal heir regardless of who sired him. The queen cannot rescind a title that's legitimate even if the person it's bestowed upon is not. If that person has been legally adopted, he could be the local mudlark's biological son and it would make absolutely no difference whatsoever! He would STILL be the heir to his adoptive father's titles and lands!

Beyond that silliness, the fact that Ash can only utter "God's blood" as an epithet is simply ludicrous! If he's as well educated as his character is supposed to be, why is that the only curse that comes to mind repeatedly? It's just dumb, undramatic and makes his character look like a dolt.

I was actually looking forward to this book and the rest of the series until I read this installment. I won't be reading any more of Ms. Archer's books as I don't find I can suspend disbelief enough to enjoy them further. Research is a wonderful thing, especially if one is writing an historical novel! A thesaurus would also not go amiss. I don't wish to be harsh, but I was so very disappointed when I got to the end of this book, I simply could not let it go without writing a review. I hope Ms. Archer's books get better with time, but it will take a long time before I venture into one of her books again.

A great book

Been meaning to learn Python for a while. Tried a rather simplistic book first but it didn't go deep enough. This book is perfect. It's easy to follow, covers all the basics but also goes into object-oriented programming and GUI forms. It's got a brilliant glossary with loads of hyperlinks so if you forget something you can just click to it. Great value for money. Highly recommended.

Downloaded this yesterday and started to work through it last night. What a superb and well written book it is. I'm a complete novice and I'm so glad I decided to buy this book out of the many out there. It was easy to follow, comprehensive and for a beginner like me, absolutely invaluable. I was so impressed with how the book was written I downloaded the authors Sci-Fi novel Cry From a Silent Planet this morning because if this guy can write a Python book this well I'm sure his novel is a well worth a read too. If you are interested in learning Python, BUY THIS BOOK, you won't be disappointed
