An excellent resource.

The Luthier's Handbook's reputation as "the Bible" for stringed instrument making is well-deserved, particularly for anyone interested in the "why" of design and construction practices. (For those more interested in the step-by-step "how" of building a guitar, I'd recommend William R. Cumpiano's Guitarmaking:Tradition and Technology. They make an excellent set.)

As a point of reference, I have a science and engineering background. My experience to date in this area has been limited to some minor instrument repair and set-up. I have a fair amount of experience in woodworking. I found this book to be very clear and readable. Based on limited experience and knowledge, I think this would also be an extremely valuable resource for anyone who has been building basic instruments who might want to try to vary their designs based on sound first principles.

Not quite what it says, but interesting

It's unfortunate the author didn't choose a better title. You'd probably expect THE Luthiers Handbook to be a how-to, but it's nothing like that. Actually it reads more like a college-level textbook. Engineering/techies will probably love it, as will anyone seriously interested in the how & why of fine instrument architecture. There's a lot in here about the tonal properties of various woods, bracings, etc. Even if you never figure out the author's 'tuning' method (or don't have your own home physics lab) you still might find yourself tapping on soundboards and thinking about such things. For the beginning luthier sticking to the tried and true, it's not essential reading however.

The book gives exactly what the preface says. It is a collection of all the things a luthier should know and a little history behind them. It is not a construction manual and should not be criticized for not being what it is not. I actually bought this book for the tap tuning section alone but am delighted with the rest of it.

An absolute phenomenal got to have book for EVERYONE !

An absolute must have book for everyone ! A phenomenal writer. I have learned more about life and our purpose here on earth and how to achieve the true relationship with God. My soul had been searching for this very thing. Not only is this a great book but it (to me) is thereference book fur life. I need and will use as my "go to" over and over again. to keep me balanced and focused. It is amazing that for the last 30 years I have been trying to figure out why we are here and what is our purpose m I have spent a lot of years in different churches and talking to different people. ... starving, looking, and wondering all the why's ! And all in one book your questions are answered. I wish I could explain how it is but it truly is something you just have to read. I can't explain it any easier. This needs to be in every home. ...a must have. .. you will use this also for a reference book for eternity. This amazing book contained all the answers I have been searching for along time, it teaches whats truly important and whats not . I cant believe finally someone has exposed the truth The Truth of Life. I have been going about things all wrong, now I know how to return to God. This is a must read book and if I had money I would make sure everyone had a copy. Pretty much all research on subject has been done for you by Mr. Prunzik the bible, the dead sea scrolls ,lost books of bible etc. all you have to do is read and learn. Amazing book!!! Thankyou Mr. Prunzik for sharing with the world.

New translation a gift

Stanislavski's "My Life in Art" was written in haste during the Moscow Art Theatre's 1922-24 European and American tours and translated into a language he neither spoke nor understood by a mysterious individual (J.J. Robbins) with less than satisfactory credentials for the job. For nearly a century this has been the version available in English and for the most part anywhere in the world outside of Russia. But upon returning to Moscow Stanislavski continued to write and revise the book which was later published in Russia and considered by Stanislavski to be both definitive and the version he was satisfied with.

Thus, Jean Bendetti's new translation of the Russian version is a welcome and valuable gift, not only to actors and the theatre but to art and artistic endeavor in general. Much is the same as the original Engligh version in terms of content, but much is also new and different, never before available in English. Of particular interest are the appendices recounting Stanislavski's more personal memories of Chekhov and the later European and American tours.

An important aspect lost in the previous translation was Stanislavski's personal, conversational tone, which is how the book itself was written; i.e. Stanislavski spoke and what he said was scribed. Thus, a whole new feeling comes of this translation that is extremely valuable, if not priceless. It is nearly impossible not to feel that you know Stanislavski very personally after reading the book. Particularly in the last section (the appendix of the European-American tour) you feel as if he has spoken to you personally about the entire experience. As such the voice and personality of this great master speaks and can be discovered once more in a way that has previously not been possible. This alone is more than worth the price of the book.

Indeed this will be a valuable and cherished volume for years to come, if not an entirely new rejuvenation of what was in its time a classic, historically influential and historically significant work.

Before writing his opus manual on acting technique, Stanislavski wrote an autobiography he hoped would detail his life and philosophy - but his publisher insisted on many cuts and changes to its length, resulting in a diminutive version Stanislavski hated - and completely revised for a 1926 Soviet edition. For the first time translator Jean Benedetti brings English readers this complete Soviet edition, pairing it with new photos and illustrations and creating a keepsake edition for any college-level collection serious about acquiring drama classics.

"Love the art in yourself, not yourself in the art." Truly one of the world's greatest arts educators, Stanislavsky's autobiography is beautifully written. It is a fascinating portrait of the history of modern acting and also of Russian history. Absolutely key for understanding the Method, and the development of today's theater.
