About the Author
Dr. Natarajan Meghanathan is a tenured Associate Professor of Computer Science at Jackson State University, Jackson, MS. He graduated with a Ph.D. in Computer Science from The University of Texas at Dallas in May 2005. Dr. Meghanathan has published more than 140 peer-reviewed articles (more than half of them being journal publications). He has also received federal education and research grants from the U. S. National Science Foundation, Army Research Lab and Air Force Research Lab. Dr. Meghanathan has been serving in the editorial board of several international journals and in the Technical Program Committees and Organization Committees of several international conferences. His research interests are Wireless Ad hoc Networks and Sensor Networks, Graph Theory, Network and Software Security, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Yenumula B. Reddy, Professor, IEEE Senior Member, IARIA Fellow and program coordinator of Computer Science, Grambling State University. His research contributions span a number of areas including wireless communications, sensor networks, and applications of game models, neural networks, and genetic algorithms to wireless networks. He is one of the editors of SENSORCOMM 2011, associate editor of ITNG 2009-2012 proceedings and associate editors of the book Soft Computing Applications in Industry. He is editorial board member of Journal BITM Transactions on EECC, SATCCN, IJSPTM, MASAUM Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences (MJEAS), and International Journal of Engineering and Industries (IJEI). Dr. Reddy is review Committee member of journals IEEE-TVC, IEEE-TVT, Journal of High performance Computing, and Journal of Communications. He is program Committee member of many conferences including SENSORCOMM (IARIA) and ICN (IARIA). He is Program Committee Chair of ITNG 2013. He has successful funding record from the federal and state grants (USA).

About the Author
Howard Karger is Professor and Head of the School of Social Work and Human Services, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. David Stoesz was Professor, Virginia Commonwealth University. Howard and David have been friends and colleagues for more than 25 years. In 2001 they collaborated on the creation of policyAmerica, a nonprofit organization dedicated to disseminating innovations in social policy. In addition to American Social Welfare Policy, they coauthored (with Lela Costin) The Politics of Child Abuse in America (Oxford University Press, 1996) and Reconstructing the American Welfare State (Rowman and Littlefield, 1992). Howard’s book, Shortchanged: Life and Debt in the Fringe Economy (Berret-Koehler, 2005) examines the financial practices and products that exploit millions of American families and won the 2006 Independent Publishers Award in Finance/Investment/Economics. David’s book, Quixote’s Ghost: The Right, the Liberati, and the Future of Social Policy (Oxford University Press, 2005), explains how conservatives have assumed control of domestic policy and proposes a new framework for social policy. It won the 2006 Pro Humanitate Literary Award. Howard lives in Brisbane, Australia; David and his son Julio live in Alexandria, Virginia.

Informative and concise

I read this book (in conjunction with other texts) for a graduate section of a Social Policies class, and was impressed with the ease both authors transformed the abstract and dry into something exciting and inspiring.
No, social policy is not the most glamorous field for college students to enter, and unarguably the American system's shrinkage is going to pose severe problems in the next couple of years, but emotional and moral rewards of doing what is right make this venture worth it. Alternately, the authors balance this view with pragmatic political approaches that equip the reader with introductory strategies to hold off or even staunch further erosion of American social policy.
The book by itself is enjoyable, but advanced classes should use the American Welfare State as a supplementary text for historical background.

I've been reading Karger and Stoesz for years. This is a good, relevant edition to understanding social welfare policy. However, the 4th edition leaves out the historical perspectives; readers will want to refer to earlier editions or supplemental sources for historical content.

Probably the best overview of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cultures in a single volume, written by one of the most prominent Maya archeologists. This edition included the information that became available with spectacular excavations at Copán, Calakmul and other Classic Maya sites, and is an indispensable book for anyone interested in understanding the worlds of ancient Mesoamerica.

The field is quite new and yet the number of publications is enormous. This book does not even try to touch all work done in this area. Instead, many concepts are presented and treated with mathematical rigor and necessary conditions for the correctness of various approaches are stated.

The price is not right, but an excellent book

Perhaps I shouldn't argue with the publishers of an optimization textbook about price calculations, but how on earth did they come up with this figure? Unless you have corporate funds to back you up, go to the library and get it there.

Having said that, this is a terrific textbook, a neat reference on all the important results in stochastic optimization. Its presentation is clear and concise, and prerequisites are briefly gathered in no less than fourteen appendices. It would be ideal to have it on the shelf, but... have I mentioned the price?

Very practical useful tool for discipleship or group study.

This is a great read and very practical on a topic that is so neglected in the Body of Christ today. I think our busy schedules and the many things that pull for our attention keep us focused on ourselves instead of seeing how we can make our mark onto the lives of others. Duncan uses personal stories and great illustrations to make discipleship practical. This book would be a great tool for a small group study as the chapters are short but provide plenty of material for discussion about application.
