Very good!

As a database programmer for 15 years, I like to re-enforce my knowledge of a skill by getting back to the basics once in a while. This book by Andy Oppel explained database concepts very well. I tried to put myself in the mind of a newbie to see how these concepts would present themselves to me as such. Mr. Oppel has succeeded very well. He takes from an overview to SQL, normalization, logical and physical database design, through more advanced subjects like UML, XML and OLAP. Now, this book won't substitute a full course-load at your college or university, but, it will get you started if you've been "volunteered" to get a database up and running at your office.

Mr. Oppel doesn't focus on any particular database package, and that's good; you can apply these concepts to Oracle, Access, MySQL, etc. There is even a chapter focusing on SQL that assumes you're using Oracle.

Note that the author doesn't provide any SQL batch programming; it's not a programming book at all. He just gets you up and running.

In sum, a good companion book to your college level intro to database theory textbook. Since Mr. Oppel teaches this at the college level, he provides questions at the end of each chapter. I recommend you answer them for yourself, if you are going this alone.

Just an update to "Demystified"

Here's a tip folks, based on extensive skimming at the book store just now, I found that "Databases: a Beginner's Guide" is simply a minor update to the earlier and much cheaper "Databases Demystified" by Oppel. And yes, I mean the same book, retitled. I mean it's really weird I thought I had deja vue til I realized what the deal was. May be something new added, but can't be much.

Great introduction to relational database management systems

It's a great book to get started on learning about relational database management systems. The author used Microsoft Access to help you see the entity relations as a beginner, which helps you draw a mental picture on how relational database works. I like the author's perspective of "if you were to design a car, you should probably know how to drive one first".

I'm on day 15. I have been dutifully doing the exercises daily without missing a day as proscribed. When I first leafed through the book I saw a photo of the lady in a headstand. I thought, really? Will that happen in 28 days? I don't know yet. So far In the first 15 days we just do headstand prep. That's the beauty of the system. Each day builds, and every four days is review. This is a really great book to either teach your self yoga or use in conjunction with yoga lessons. You don't even need a mat or a block or any props (so far) to do this yoga.

Each day ends with a page long thought or idea to consider about yoga. The beginning of the book said plan for about 20 minutes a day for your yoga. I must breathe slower than most because it takes me about 30 -40 minutes a day (not counting meditation) to do each session. A minute of meditation is suggested before beginning. I've gradually been lengthening my meditation 'cause it's fun.

Some of the alignments may seem mysterious to modern yoga enthusiasts. I decided to do the poses as depicted in the book even if what we do in the studio now is slightly different. For example, cobra pose in this book has the elbows way out to the sides. Follow the directions because they are linked to subsequent poses.

The breath exercises are the best. I feel they are covered in greater detail than the newer yoga books i have read.

A classic for decades, still the best beginner/intermediate yoga book around. I am discovering it all over again after straining my back.

Perhaps that is true in CASABLANCA or in the song by Herman Hupfeld circa 1931, but here in this highly sensuous coffee table book edited by Stephan Niederwieser there is a lot more to a kiss than a `just'! Bruno Gmünder Verlag books always push the envelope, but this book focuses not on the physicality of encounters of the body, but instead draws attention to the variety of ways the kiss can happen. The art is by photographers of the highest rank in the Bruno Gmünder echelon and each in his own style brings together lips and faces and, yes, at times more of the bodies providing a complete spectrum of bussing.

The books opens with a sly Foreword by Jeffrey Essmann who offers lessons in the erotica of the kiss, including of course that shy first kiss, the kiss of love, and the kiss of passion. And then the book bounces into 260 pages of color photographs by the likes of Jeff Palmer, David Vance, Justin Munroe, Howard Roffman, Sandor Bross, Ed Freeman, River Betancourt, Mark Grantham, Jay Diers, Jay Jorgenson, Joseph Sinclair, David Rothwell, Frank Louis - 48 in all. It is multiracial, varying body types, public and private, and in all, it is a collection that will be returned to many times. The models vary in type but every one of them is a winner. This is a very successful book, audience directed for now, but with the gradual acceptance of movies such as `A Single Man' etc there will be an enhanced audience of women who want to know how men react to the art of the kiss.
