This is my personal journey through one of the greatest warrior and leadership cultures of today, which ultimately provided me with defining leadership characteristics and the skills of a serious warrior. Nobody is born a great leader, they are made through hard work and determination.

My first Indian name given to me by the medicine man when I was a child was Bobcat. As I grew and became a young man, I returned home from my first combat experience and was given my warrior's name, Evergreen Mountain. I am an American, first and foremost, but I am also a Pueblo and Yaqui Indian. I am a former member of the US Army’s 18th Airborne Corps, 75th Ranger Regiment, and spent most of my career as an operational member of a Special Missions Unit under the United States Army Special Operations Command.

These are some of my most important leadership lessons learned from the battlefield of the war on terror. It is my sincere hope that this book serves as a resource and a compass, providing direction and guidance for individuals seeking or in a leadership position.

About the Author
Rob Trivino is retired from a long career in the United States Army. During his time on active duty he was assigned to several units; he spent the majority of his time in service assigned as an operational member of a United States Army Special Missions Unit under the United States Army Special Operations Command. Rob has extensive peacetime and wartime leadership and tactical experience, leading small teams and larger maneuver elements in combat at the ground tactical level. He has deployed on multiple combat missions to the Balkans, Afghanistan, and Iraq and has served as a Sniper Team Leader, Operations Sergeant Major, and both Assault and Sniper Element Sergeants Major. In his final assignment, Rob served as a senior enlisted advisor for a multi-service organization supporting the special operations community. Rob's awards and decorations include the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, 5 Bronze Stars (2 for Valor), and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. The BEST book on leadership I have ever read

I have read a great many books on management, leadership, motivation, etc over the years, as well as many biographies/autobiographies of special operations soldiers. I also graduated from one of the top business schools in the country that claimed to produce leaders (and does, but not because of what is taught). I can tell you with all sincerity none of the above addresses TRUE leadership the way Robert has and the best part is he keeps it simple and accessible--straight to the point, no BS. This is not a book on the military or military leadership--it is on leadership period, the military aspects are only used to illustrate his points. If you're looking for a military story there is some of that in here but you'll be disappointed if that is ALL you are seeking. Everyone should read this book, not just "leaders". Even if one is not in a leadership role, everyone needs to lead his/her own life! We are social creatures by nature and every social interaction requires the skills and methodology contained in this book. It doesn't matter if you're a CEO or a stay at home parent, you WILL benefit from this book. I come from a very long line of military on both sides of my family. I learned my leadership style (very similar to Robert's) from my father, who credits the Navy for his very successful financial career. I have been quite successful in my own career by following the same tenets of leadership Robert so brilliantly presents in this book. This year I have trained with several former Green Beret and Delta operators, every one of whom is first rate! While Navy SEALs get a lot of press, and I've known a few, I have found Delta guys have the most to offer in so many areas. These guys are not ego driven as a rule, in fact the vast majority are extremely humble, as is Robert. I have had the distinct pleasure of meeting men who served with Robert, men who are legends in their own right, tell me Robert's legacy and influence in Delta is profound. Buy this book today, you will be thoroughly engaged and it may change your life. I feel so strongly about it that I am buying several copies on my own dime to give to friends and coworkers.

Special operations soldier shares his hard earned experiences

Rob Trivino shares his hard earned leadership lessons with anybody willing to work hard to become a more effective leader. This is a great book and hard to put down. If you are looking for a shortcut to appearing to be a leader, this is not the book for you. Rob demonstrates that to become a better leader you must become a better person. Character is at the core of Rob's leadership principles. Rob is a very humble guy with a tremendous amount of credibility. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

like any other skill

After having served in the Marine Corps and currently assigned to a tactical unit for a large police force, one would think that leadership would be a natural skill. However, like any other skill, leadership needs to be cultivated, practiced and refined. Rob Trivino's book gives you a no nonsense view on how this came about for this humble hero. This book gives you real life experiences that every new military recruit, policeman, or business manager can use to improve their own role as a leader or start to build those important skills. The book keeps you wanting to read page after page, and in the end, leaves the reader reflecting on their own performance. This reader is in full agreement that leaders are made, and this book gives clear direction on what it takes to achieve that goal. As stated earlier, this book is a must have for any person in a potential leadership position.

A much-needed help for learners of Icelandic

At first glance, Icelandic grammar looks a lot like German grammar. Same system of noun inflections: nominative, accusative, dative, genitive; masculine, feminine, neuter. Similar use of verbs: simple present, simple past, and a batch of "helping" or auxiliary verbs for use with the infinitives and participles like other Germanic languages, even English, e.g. "I have gone" or "I must go." Similar use of endings on nouns and agreement of adjectives with their nouns. Similar use of "ablaut" or internal vowel changes, as in English goose-geese or swim/swam/swum.

But when you start to learn Icelandic after some exposure to German, for example, you quickly find out that the volume of information is almost overwhelming, and you can be tongue-tied for weeks or months trying to put together all the pieces of the puzzle just to form a simple sentence, by following all the rules and tables of endings, looking up declension and conjugation classes, and all the other details that you need. Other modern Germanic languages have over time rounded the corners and worn down the bumps and knobs and sharp edges; today they have a lot less variation; fewer details to remember. Icelandic, by comparison, has conserved the richness of the language of the sagas and skalds with much less change over the last millennium. Most of the little bits and pieces are still there.

This book gives you a quick reference that does not require a lot of thinking and calculation to produce the core of a sentence, the verb that expresses the action. You need to know the basic verb form, the infinitive, in order to look things up; an English-to-Icelandic index of verbs would be a welcome addition. But then you have what you need in a compact, easy-to-read format that allows you at a glance to produce the desired verb (and its subject pronoun, if needed) instantly; you can save your mental processes for the nouns and adjectives and adverbs and prepositions...your ability to speak or write a sentence is speeded up significantly, and in speech, even if perhaps you get a noun or adjective ending wrong, your listener will understand what you are trying to say. The core of the sentence is there and you can get on with expressing your idea. The other details will fall into place with practice.

Excellent help for learning Icelandic

Icelandic grammar is daunting for a native English speaker, with verbs taking on different inflections based on person, number, and tense. All Icelandic grammar textbooks give the rules for conjugating verbs, but these rules can be very complex for some verb classes, and the texts often have just a handful of example conjugations. Icelandic Verbs is purely verb conjugations, with each page a table of conjugations for a single verb. While it's still essential to know the conjugation rules and be able to apply them yourself, having a book full of examples is a great help in learning these rules (especially if you learn best by example.) And for irregular verbs there's no substitute for a book like this.

The verbs in the book are ordered alphabetically in Icelandic. A nice addition would be an English index to help lookup verbs when you've forgotten their translation.

Could be improved by having a classification of verb paradigms and a more extensive list of verbs at the end of the book with the number of the paradigm Use of color could help identify irregular parts of a paradigm. There are better online resources e.g. Verbix Icelandic. The Christine Joerg book of verb conjugations also available from Amazon is much better.

Clumsy narrative

Outstanding figures and very complete descriptions. However, as an English speaking engineer, I found many of the discussions rather clumsily written. I'm guessing that it was translated from the German by someone who doesn't thoroughly understand the subject matter.

I almost left this one out of the series and I would have if it were not for my friends who tell me they are always wanting to bend some sheet metal for a project.
This one uses no castings. It’s a welding project using standard structural steel and common hardware items to build a compact portable bending brake.
Its a 15" brake as detailed but you can scale up or down in size within limits. Definitely not a heavy duty brake but you can make neat bends in 26 gauge metal to form duct, boxes, drawers, belt guards and dozens of items for your shop projects Some have beefed up the leaves and pivots so that metal as heavy as 20 gauge can be bent sharply.

Very Do-able project! Do this D.G. project first

Well, I'm almost done with my brake (only the clamp linkage needs to be attached). If you do any of the Gingery projects you should start with this one.
Here's why:
Only basic layout skills required
Useful project when done
Relativly fast to build. Takes about 1 - 2 weeks to complete (2-4 hrs a day) for a novice like me
I bought the Slip Roll Machine book and got stuck on the third part. Squared-off interior holes are hard to make without a square broach. That's totally bogus to weaken the part with an entrance point for a vertical bandsaw. (And makes for even non-technical people around the shop question your abilities as a machine builder). Anyway, the sheet metal brake book doesn't ask you to perform such hacked-up methods, and so is better.
Here are some of the drawbacks of the book:
1. The picture on the cover isn't quite the same as the project inside ( no little stops attached to the clamp grip, and the hand-levers are not rounded as he shows in the drawings)
2. He says weld top and bottom of the base leaf where it meets the pivot bracket (If you follow his advice you will destroy the 1/4 - 20 hole in your path!) I welded a fat bead on the bottom only, and this is just fine. This won't mean anything to you unless you are building the project.
3. It would have been better for him to dimension a drawing from only two edges, not four. Thus, all your holes will be correctly distanced in relation to one-another, even if your hacksaw cuts are a bit off. Anyway, you can still do a little shop math to make-up for this. Being a beginner, it would have simplified things.
4. He oddly says that the reader most-likely doesn't have a metal-shop at his house (which is true), yet this is book 7 out of his metal-shop from scratch series!
Overall, excellent book. Very fun project. When you file and then sandpaper off the file marks from the pivot bracket, you can get a part that looks so good it looks store-bought. That's pretty cool. I didn't have the exact steel stock on hand and was still able to build it.
What really counts here is: Does this brake work when you're done? The answer is yes!

assuming you're really committed, and enjoy hard core do it yourselfing. Most folks could buy whatever they're going to make with this cheaper if their time is worth much. On the other hand, making and using one's own tools can give a real feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. Basically, a lifestyle choice...

Oldie, but still a goodie

This is a small book that holds some pretty easy to follow design plans for a metal brake. Very little prior knowledge is needed (meaning you don't need to be a professional metal fabricator) to build a simple to use metal brake. All you need is to be able to read diagrams.

Kindergarten-Grade 4–King Humpty Dumpty surrounds his world with a fence, thereby separating his colorful kingdom from the dim, dusty domain of the peasants. He spends his days smelling the flowers, enjoying the songs of birds, eating elegant meals, admiring artwork (paintings of himself), and reading by the light of the setting sun reflecting off diamonds. When a curious peasant peeks over the fence, the enraged king fires all of his staff and begins building a higher barrier out of heavy stones. However, the pampered monarch is unused to such work and has a terrible fall, landing on the other side of the wall. The peasants bury him with little fanfare, and the book concludes with the traditional nursery rhyme. Delessert's gray-and-brown peasants resemble the whimsical mice and rabbitlike creatures in A Was an Apple Pie (Creative Editions, 2005). Humpty has an egg-shaped head with a large protruding nose and wears a golden half-circle crown. The surreal landscape is embellished with realistic-looking birds and flowers. The illustrations are the real strength of the book. Unfortunately, this interpretation of Humpty Dumpty is too bleak and heavy-handed and lacks child appeal.–Robin L. About the Author
Etienne Delessert was born in 1941 in Switzerland. For more than thirty years the self-taught artist has been translating his and the world’s ideas, passions, fantasies, and nightmares into the visual language of books, magazine illustrations, posters, animated films, paintings, and sculptures. His imaginary creatures and landscapes juxtapose chaos and order, the familiar and the fantastic, the serious and the joyous, to clarify this world and create new and surprising universes. Delessert has illustrated more than eighty books, including collaborations with avant-garde playwright Eugene Ionesco and renowned psychologist Jean Piaget. His internationally acclaimed books have been translated into more than fifteen languages and have garnered numerous awards and distinctions, including ten gold medals from the American Society of Illustrators. He lives in Connecticut with his wife, designer Rita Marshall, and their son Adrien.

Delessert's illustrations are, of course, bright and whimsical and delightful. I bought this book for my granddaughter. When she came to see me recently, we went to an exhibit of Delessert's illustrations for his children's books. I wanted her to read some of the books before we went, so she could "meet" Delessert before seeing the exhibit. She loved the books and was totally enchanted with the exhibit, reading each book on display beside the original illustrations. Not only are the drawings bright and appealing, but Delessert makes of Humpty a story of selfishness set against gentle graciousness.
